LORD BUDDHA SAKYAMUNI

Lord Buddha Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism. He was born in 623 B.C. in Lumbini Grove, under the shade of a flowering Sal tree and given the name Siddhartha, which means one whose purpose has been achieved.

He renounced all worldly pleasures and later attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at Gaya, where he was called the Buddha which means "The Awakened One". Thereafter, the Buddha traveled to different places to expound the Dharma to a diverse range of people for 45 years.

Before the Buddha passed into parinirvana, he told his disciples that "All conditioned things are impermanent." Having said that, he passed into Mahaparinirvana.

To celebrate the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Lord Buddha Sakyamuni, our centre has arranged a series of programs, where you can read about it in this newsletter!

BUDDHA SAKYAMUNI & 16 ARHATS EMPOWERMENT

Date & Time: 15th May 2011 (Sunday at 10.00am)

In conjunction with Vesak Day, our centre resident spiritual teacher, Samten Rinpoche, will give the Buddha Sakyamuni & 16 Arhats empowerment.

Before Lord Buddha Sakyamuni entered in parinirvana, he has requested the 16 Arhats to protect the Buddha Dharma and expounded it to sentient beings.

The empowerment acts as a blessing from the Buddha and the great Arhats. The main significance for receiving this empowerment are:
1)

To request ever flourishing of the Buddha Dharma
2)

To maintain harmony and peace between students
3)

To prevent dispute or obscuration on the path of practicing the Buddha Dharma
4)

To attain enlightenment of the Three Vehicles

All are welcome to join us in this empowerment.

VESAK DAY CELEBRATION

One of the most important events in the year for the Buddhist community is the observance of Vesak. This is where Lord Buddha Shakyamuni’s birth, enlightenment and parinirvana all fall on the full moon of the lunar month, 17th May 2011.

On this day, Buddhists take part in the ceremonial bathing of the statue of baby Prince Siddhartha. A small standing statue of prince is placed in a basin of perfumed water strewn with flowers. The Buddhists scoop the perfumed water with a ladle and pour it over the statue. This act of bathing symbolize the purification of one unwholesome actions. Besides being a festival for rejoicing and making offerings to the Triple Gems, it is also an occasion for reflecting on our personal spiritual development.

Though not compulsory, many Buddhists take vegetarian meals on this day.

We have the following events lined up on this special day as follows:

ANIMALS LIBERATION

Saving the lives of animals on the verge of being killed is considered an 'intensified' virtuous activity, in accumulation of merits which surpasses many others.

In our countless rebirths, we had parents, friends and enemies because to of their past karmas, may have reborn in animal realm. Animals do not have the capacity to reflect on Dharma due to their negativities and ignorance. We can help to leave positive imprints in the animals' minds by reciting mantras in their presence. This will create the cause for them to have good rebirth in their future lives where they can meet and practice Dharma.

The benefits of Animals Liberation are one will be blessed with long life, prevents sickness and troubles, self-arising compassion, innumerable merits, happiness and many others.

You may choose to join us in the animal liberation's trip or make voluntary donation towards the release of these precious lives!

Saga Dawa refers to the 4th month of the Tibetan calendar. According to Tibetan calendar, it is a special month for practice and performing virtuous actions, since the birth (on the 7th day), enlightenment and parinirvana (both on the 15th day) of Buddha Shakyamuni all fall within this month.

In particular, the 15th day (15th June 2011) is also known as Saga Dawa Duchen, where the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied by 10 million times.

LONGCHEN NYINGTHIG MAHAKALA PUJA

Our centre will be conducting 3 days Longchen Nyingthig Mahakala Puja from 24th to 26th June 2011.

Mahakala, a protector of the Buddhist teachings, is also known as the chief dharmapala.  Dharmapalas are basically Buddhas who undertake the role of removing obstacles on the path of practitioners.

The objective of Mahakala is to assist practitioners in removing anything that impedes their practice, as well as to encourage exertion and devotion and at the same time purify obscurations and wrongdoings.  Blessings will be bestowed and obstacles will be removed if one prays earnestly to Mahakala.

So long as one attends the prayer sessions and continually makes prayers and offerings to Mahakala, the protections of Mahakala and His retinue will not depart from oneself until perfect awakening is experienced. Mahakala prayers also foster peacefulness in a country, harmony at home and better career prospects.
