VESAK DAY

One of the most important events in the year for the Buddhist community is the observance of Vesak. This is where Lord Buddha Shakyamuni’s birth, enlightenment and parinirvana all fall on the full moon of the lunar month, 9th May 2009.

On this day, Buddhists take part in the ceremonial bathing of the statue of baby Prince Siddhartha. A small standing statue of prince is placed in a basin of perfumed water strewn with flowers. The Buddhists scoop the perfumed water with a ladle and pour it over the statue. This act of bathing symbolize the purification of one unwholesome actions. Besides being a festival for rejoicing and making offerings to the Triple Gems, it is also an occasion for reflecting on our personal spiritual development.

On Vesak Day, some Buddhists release captive animals such as birds and turtles. This act of kindness recalls the Buddha teaching of Universal Compassion. Though not compulsory, many Buddhists take vegetarian meals on this day.

We have the following events lined up on this special day as follows:

HIS HOLINESS DRUBWANG PEMA NORBU RINPOCHE'S MAHAPARINIRVANA

The 11th Throneholder of the Palyul Lineage of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism, His Holiness Drubwang Padma Norbu Rinpoche, entered the final stage of meditation, Thugdam on 27th March 2009, at the Palyul Namdroling Monastery in Bylakuppe, South India. He remained in meditation for 8 days and on 3rd April 2009, His Holiness released from His meditation.

His Holiness Penor Rinpoche's Holy Body (Kudung) is now at Zangdok Palri Temple at South India. Daily His Holiness Karma Kuchen Rinpoche leads the sangha of Tulkus, Khenpos, Lopons, Lamas, monks and nuns in pujas that include Vajrasattva, Offering to the Guru and others. The pujas will continue for 49 days until 22nd May 2009.

Students may chant "Prayer for the Swift Rebirth for Kyabje Pema Norbu Rinpoche"., which is available in two versions, the short prayer or the long prayer. These can be downloaded from our website www.palyulsg.org .

H.H. DRUBWANG PEMA NORBU RINPOCHE MAHAPARINIRVANA 49TH DAY PRAYER

As mentioned by Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche,

"The practices performed during the Forty-Nine Days are not for His Holiness but for our own sake. Spending these seven weeks in intensive practice gives us the opportunity to purify our samaya, receive the lineage blessings, and so on. And on a relative level, this period of time gives us the opportunity to be together and to grieve. Even though we know His Holiness is "only changing clothes," until we have attained a level of realization we will continue to experience attachment and feel sorrow. Through our practice and going through this time together, I know we have all felt the strengthening our connection with one another and with the heart essence of our precious teacher, His Holiness Penor Rinpoche."

Thus on the 49th Day, 22nd May 2009, our centre will conduct prayer for devotees to participate together with us. The program is as follow:

** Amendment of the prayer date. The prayer was initially planned for 1 day on 22/05. As we're having a visiting Khenpo in our centre now, Rinchen Lama has decided to make it into a 3 days prayers, starting from 20/05 to 22/05 (the 49th Day). Do inform your family and friends of the amendment. **

We are pleased that Khenpo Karchoe will be leading the 3 days program. You may read about his biography below here.

Saga Dawa refers to the 4th month of the Tibetan calendar. According to Tibetan calendar, it is a special month for practice and performing virtuous actions, since the birth (on the 7th day), enlightenment and parinirvana (both on the 15th day) of Buddha Shakyamuni all fall within this month.
