MARCH & APRIL 2006 ISSUE

Our compassionate guru, H.H. Penor Rinpoche, has recently underwent a successful knee replacement surgery.  He is currently in excellent health and residing at Namdroling Monastery.

Over there, the annual Great Accomplishment Group Practice “Drubchen” will be held from the seventh day of the first Tibetan month to the fifteenth.  This holy event consists of shifts of monks and nuns conducting the prayers 24-hours a day for a week continuously.  There will also be activities such as the hanging of grand thangkas and Lama Dances!

Following that, there will be the annual Ngondro, Tsa Lung and Dzogchen retreats. (More information on Palyul retreats are available at www.palyul.org)

Here in Singapore, we are most honoured to have the presence of Khenpo Pema Sherab from 24th to 26th March. Khenpo Pema Sherab is the most senior Khenpo at Namdroling Monastery’s Ngagyur Nyingma Institute (NNI).

There will be a Gesar and Mahakala Puja held at Yeo’s Building from 14th to 16th April. We hope to have your active participation as all the donations received will be channeled to our New Centre Building Fund.

Brief Introduction on Khenpo Pema Sherab

Khenpo Pema Sherab was born in 1936 at Riphu, a place in Dege Jomda, in the Kham Province, Tibet.  At 14, he went to Lhasa and studied under masters and scholars of all schools of Tibetan Buddhism.  He was bestowed novice vows by Shechen Kongtrul Rinpoche in 1953.

Khenpo received most of his teachings from H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, oral transmission from H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche and Penor Rinpoche as well as Northern Treasure Teachings from H.H. Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche.

In 1968, H.H. Penor Rinpoche invited Khenpo to Namdroling for the purpose of teaching Dharma to the monks.  Since the establishment of the NNI in 1978, Khenpo has been teaching in this institute out of compassion and kindness to the students.  During his tenure, he has wholeheartedly rendered his priceless service without thoughts of the worldly concerns and has stayed in the institute all these years forbearing all hardships for the preservation and dissemination of Buddha’s teaching in general and the Nyingma doctrine in particular.

His students deeply respect him for his in-depth lectures, straightforwardness and kindness. For the future generations, he has composed many books on Buddhist philosophy.  All in all, he has taken the responsibility to manage the institute with great compassion to this day. Hence his kindness is truly unfathomable.

Brief Explanation on the Pujas

Gesar was a great warrior king and protector of the Dharma teaching. He is regarded as an incarnation of Padmasambhava. Mahakala, a protector of the Buddhist teachings, is also known as the chief Dharmapala.  Dharmapalas are basically Buddhas who undertake the role of removing obstacles on the path of practitioners.

The function of Mahakala is to assist practitioners in removing anything that impedes their practice, as well as to encourage exertion and devotion and at the same time purify obscurations and wrongdoings.  Blessings will be bestowed and obstacles will be removed if one prays earnestly to Mahakala.

So long as one participates in the prayer sessions and continuously makes prayers and offerings to Mahakala, the protections of Mahakala and His retinue will not depart from oneself until perfect awakening is experienced.  As explained by Ven Kalsang Rinpoche, Mahakala prayers also foster peacefulness in a country, harmony at home and better career prospects.

Participating in the Fire Puja will allow one to accumulate boundless merits so as to increase one’s lifespan, prosperity, clear previous karmic debts and remove obstacles on one’s path to enlightenment.

Dzambala is a Bodhisattva who has attained the 8th Bhumi level.  He possesses remarkable power to free sentient beings from the clutches of poverty and starvation in order to guide them towards the path of ultimate Buddhahood. During this prayer session, the 21 emanations of Dzambala will be invoked. Participants who have purchased the Orgyen Norla Wealth Vases from us on December 2004 are welcome to bring their wealth vases for blessings.
