stated
Ø To
commit to a vegetarian diet for at least two days prior to
the Naga Puja and on the actual day of the puja, as this is
considered a precept of the event.
Ø Participants
are advised to be modestly dressed, and no animal products
(e.g. leather belts or wallets etc) should be worn or
carried on board.
Nagas are a kind of long-lived
serpentlike beings with miraculous powers. They mostly live
in the depths of water and are supposed to control the
weather, especially rain. Khenpo Jurme has specially
selected this date as it was deemed an auspicious and
suitable day of the year for performing the Naga Puja, and
also because the Nagas are expected to be very active on
this particular day.
Khenpo Jurme and the lamas will first conduct
a ritual on board the ferryboat, and subsequently all
participants will make their offerings to the Nagas in the
sea.
