_____________________________________

Khenpo Katyayana is one of the first batch of khenpo graduated from Ngagyur Nyingma Institute in South India. We are glad that he has accepted our request to give teaching for our students here. This discourse will be based on "Thirty-seven practices of the Bodhisattvas", a classic scripture from 14th Century Tibet that presents the entire training that a Bodhisattva needs to undergo in thirty seven profound pith instructions. Each of the thirty seven versus in this scripture is a complete jewel in itself. Each verse has the potential to bring in a lasting transformation in our lives, and take us beyond our mundane afflictions. We welcome you to join us in this teaching.

Introduction of Khenpo Jamyang Tsering Rinpoche (Khenpo Katyayana)

Khenpo Jamyang Tsering is one of the most senior and respected khenpos in Namdroling Monastery. He became a monk at young age and gradually became a Bikshu (fully ordained monk). He completed the nine year studies in the Ngagyur Nyingma Institute, receiving teaching of Buddha Dharma in Sutra and Tantra. Thereafter he engaged in propagating the Dharma teaching for a period of three years. Being a scholar and highly qualified spiritual master, the late H.H. Penor Rinpoche officially enthroned him as Khenpo (an abbot) and conferred him Doctorate in Buddhism in 1989.

He has also received many major empowerments and Nyingmapa teachings from great Buddhist masters like late H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, late H.H. Khentse Rinpoche, late H.H. Penor Rinpoche and etc. Until today he has continuously upheld the teaching of the Dharma according to the Buddha's teaching. He has served the Monastery for many years, carrying out his duties in accordance to the monastic rules and discipline. In 2010, he was the principal for Ngagyur Ngagyur Nyingma Institute. He is capable of teaching all the Buddha Dharma and it will be very beneficial to students who wish to learn and practice it.

SMOKE PUJA (SANG PUJA)

According to Tibetan calendar, 15th day of the 5th Tibetan month (falls on 15th July 2011) is Universal Smoke Ritual Day. The ritual involves reciting prayers and making a large smoke offering by burning food (oatmeal, beans, biscuits, candies, sugar), drinks (juice, milk), pieces of colorful cloths, flowers and incense.

The smoke or its essence is being offered to four groups of beings: Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and all the other deities; the dharma protectors; all sentient beings; the nagas and spirits to whom we may owe a karmic debt. For the first two groups, the Smoke is presented as offerings while for the other two, it is given as gifts.

Before putting our plate or cup of offering into the fire, one must visualize that the offering is a vast ocean of precious substances offered to the four beings mentioned above and that all of them are extremely pleased when they receive our offerings and gifts.

This Smoke Puja enables participants to accumulate merits and blessings. It facilitates the purification of our bad karma, sicknesses and obstacles, paying off the karmic debts of our previous lives, as well as increasing wealth and life spans for our present and future lives.

Below is the schedule for this Smoke Puja.

THE 1.2 MILLION VAJRA GURU MANTRA ACCUMULATION

Starting from 2nd to 8th August 2011

Vajra Guru Mantra to be accumulated:
OM AH HUNG BENZA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUNG

In conjunction with the Anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava’s birth and Chokhor Duchen (merits multiplying day), our centre will conduct our yearly 1.2 Million Vajra Guru Mantra Accumulation from 2nd to 8th August 2011.

The tenth day of the sixth Tibetan month, which falls on 8th August 2011, is the anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava’s birth from a lotus at Dhanakhosha Lake amid wondrous signs.  Also known as Guru Rinpoche and the second Buddha, he was the emanation of Buddha Amitabha, and whose coming was prophesised by Lord Buddha in the Sutras and Tantras. It is said that the more delusions and difficulties there are, the swifter and more powerful he is.  When the Tibetans need blessings or protection, their natural reflex is to invoke Guru Rinpoche, and when great masters face crises, even they call out to him as their ultimate source of refuge.

Chokhor Duchen (on 15th July) is known as the Anniversary of Lord Buddha’s Turning of the Dharma Wheel for the first time. It is one of the four great Duchens of the year during which the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied by 10 million times.

Devotees are strongly encouraged to engage in this wholesome activity with us!

The general objectives of this program are to pray for:

Ø  Buddha Dharma to be ever-flourishing even during this degenerate age,

Ø  Peace, happiness and harmony to prevail in this world,

Ø  Warfare, famines and sicknesses to be eliminated.

The core objectives of this program are:

Ø  To pray for the longevity of all the great masters of Buddhism.

Brief Explanation of the 7th Month

In the Chinese tradition, the Chinese Lunar Seventh Month is known as the "Hungry Ghost Festival". It is where all the ghosts are released from hell for a one-month break.

To the Buddhists, the 15th day of the 7th month is known as the "Buddha's Joy Day". This is the last day of the Sangha's summer retreat, where they had observed the precepts and practiced cultivation, thus their merits accumulated are immense and beyond imagination. In the Ullambana Sutra, the Buddha instructs his disciple Maudgalyayana on how to obtain liberation for his mother, who was reborn in the realm of the hungry ghost, by making offering to these sanghas through their immense merits.

HUNDRED DEITIES CHANG CHOG PUJA

In accordance with Chinese Lunar Seventh month, our centre will conduct the Hundred Deities Chang Chog Puja on 13th & 14th August 2011.

Rinpoche and lamas will chant the Hundred Deities Prayer for the benefit of all the deceased. During the Ceremony, we call upon the Hundred Deities and make offerings to them. The merits accumulated from these offerings are dedicated to the deceased to help them in their karma purification and liberation. The prayer will also help awaken the consciousness and eliminate the desire of the souls in the Bardo (intermediate period between death and rebirth) so that they may be liberated and may take rebirth in Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land instead of the six realms of Samsara (wheel of existence).

At the end of the ritual, the paper tablets with the names of the deceased are burnt. The fire symbolizes the wisdom of the Hundred Deities and the act of burning represents the cutting of the attachment of the deceased from the notion of "ego" or "self" (which is the cause of one's sufferings). It is said that through this ceremony, the consciousness of the deceased are merged together with the wisdom of the Hundred Deities bringing the deceased to their liberation.

For those who participate and make offerings in the Hundred Deities Prayer ceremony, it is said that they will also accumulate immeasurable merits and also extinguish bad or negative karmic connections with the deceased. Whoever sees, hears or touches the text of the Hundred Deities will be blessed.

Interested participants can refer to the attached Hundred Deities Chang Chog form for registration of this puja.
