CHOD  PUJA

Venerable Tara Pempa Tashi Rinpoche

Date: 8th & 22nd August 2009
Time / Venue: 8pm in Centre

Our centre will be holding the Chod Puja which will be conducted by Tara Rinpoche. This is a powerful ceremony in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and is intended to dispel negative forces whose presence are indicated by incurable dieases, cancers, mental illness, depression, sickness and other personal problems as well as removing visible and invisible obstacles. The Chod rites aimed at first invoking through wrath then liberating through compassion all negativities that causes diseases, accidents and all non-conducive conditions. The ritual is a great benefit to both the living and deceased.

You are welcome to sit in during the prayers by Tara Rinpoche and Lamas to receive the blessing. Contribution for this puja is at voluntary amount.

Brief Biography of Tara Pempa Tashi

Tara Pempa Tashi Rinpoche became monk at the age of 7 years old. Thereafter he received the full ordination vow (Bikshu) from H.H. Penor Rinpoche.

Tara Rinpoche has received many teachings from various high lamas of Nyingma sects such as H.H. Dilgo Khentse Rinpoche, H.H. Zongnong Rinpoche, H.H. Dodrup Rinpoche and H.H. Penor Rinpoche. He has received the full Ngondro, Tsa Lung and Dzogchen according to the Nam Chö cycle, Rinchen Terzod, Nyingthig Yabshi, Kama, Nam Cho, Ratna Lingpa's treasure teachings, Kalachakra, and so on. After receiving the complete spiritual instruction of Dzogchen and its empowerment, oral transmission and explanation of three roots including preliminary practice from H.H. Penor Rinpoche, he took nine years retreat at the retreat centre.

He has been teaching the Buddha Dharma to 700 monks of our Monastery for several years and has taught young Tulkus in chanting the prayer texts. He has been the Chanting Master of our Namdroling Monastery in South India, where he leads the whole assembly of monks and nuns in the prayers during major Pujas presided by H.H. Penor Rinpoche. Whenever H.H. Penor Rinpoche travelled to Singapore, Philippines, Taiwan, USA and etc for major Pujas, he will followed along as the chanting master for these events. He is capable of teaching all the Buddha Dharma and it will be very beneficial to the students who wish to learn and practice Dharma.

Tara Rinpoche has been practicing the Chod Practice for more than 30 years. He is very well-versed in this practice and has fully complete the practice. It is indeed very fortunate of us to be able to participate in the Chod Puja leads by him.

It coincides with Chokhur Duchen on 25/07, which is a merits multiplying day. On 31st July, we celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava, with Guru Rinpoche tsok offering puja. Then in the month of August, our centre will conduct the Hundred Deities Chang Chog Puja in conjunction with the Chinese Lunar Seventh Month. MEDICINE BUDDHA PUJA

Our centre will be conducting a 3 days Medicine Buddha Puja from 24th to 26th July. This coincides with the Chokhur Duchen (Buddha Shakyamuni First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma) on 25/07, where all positives and negative actions are multiplied by 10 millions times. The puja is to pray for those who are suffering from diseases outbreak, sickness, illness and etc, and for the well-being and good health of everyone.

Medicine Buddha is the Buddha of Healing. He is depicted with a deep blue body, his left hand in meditation mudra holds a begging bowl with medicinal substances and his right hand in the mudra of supreme generosity holds an arura, or myrobalan, fruit, this plant represent all the best medicines, to show his healing powers. Devotion and prayers to the Medicine Buddha will help prevent diseases from pervading our minds and our bodies. For those who are sick, he uses his healing powers to help them quickly recover from the illnesses. He also helps destroy our ignorance and our self-cherishing mind. Hence, practice to the Medicine Buddha brings health, long-life as well as clarity of mind.

Our centre will prepare small bottles of water, which will be blessed during the 3 days puja. It will be distributed to all participants at the end of the 3rd day puja. The program is as follows;

GURU PADMASAMBHAVA BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

The tenth day of the sixth Tibetan month (31th July 2009) is the anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava’s birth from a lotus at Dhanakhosha Lake amid wondrous signs.  Also known as Guru Rinpoche and the second Buddha, he was the emanation of Buddha Amitabha, and whose coming was prophesised by Lord Buddha in the Sutras and Tantras. It is said that the more delusions and difficulties there are, the swifter and more powerful he is.  When the Tibetans need blessings or protection, their natural reflex is to invoke Guru Rinpoche, and when great masters face crises, even they call out to him as their ultimate source of refuge.

Listed below is an excerpt from a song sung by Guru Rinpoche just before his departure.
It was directed at his disciples who were begging Him to take them along:
“As I now take leave in a miraculous way,
You cannot follow me with your material bodies.
Exert yourself constantly in making supplications,
And you will always be in my presence.”

On this day, our centre will be conducting a full day Guru Rinpoche Tsok Puja as follows;

HUNDRED DEITIES CHANG CHOD PUJA

In conjunction with the Chinese Lunar Seventh month, our centre has arranged the Hundred Deities Chang Chog Puja on 29th & 30th August 2009.

The Sangha members will chant the Hundred Deities Prayer for the benefit of all the deceased. During the ceremony, the Lama calls upon the Hundred Deities and make offerings to them. The merits accumulated from these offerings are dedicated to the deceased to help them in their karma purification and liberation. The prayer will also help awaken the consciousness and eliminate the desire of the souls in the Bardo (intermediate period between death and rebirth) so that they may be liberated and may take rebirth in Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land instead of the six realms of Samsara.

At the end of the ritual, the paper tablets with the names of the deceased are burnt. The fire symbolizes the wisdom of the Hundred Deities and the act of burning represents the cutting of the attachment of the deceased from the notion of "ego" or "self" (which is the cause of one's sufferings). It is said that through this ceremony, the consciousness of the deceased are merged together with the wisdom of the Hundred Deities bringing the deceased to their liberation.

For those who participate and make offerings in the Hundred Deities Puja, it is said that they will accumulate immeasurable merits and could also extinguish bad or negative karmic connections with the deceased. Interested participants can refer to the attached Hundred Deities Chang Chog form for registration of this puja.

Brief Explanation of the 7th Month

In the Chinese tradition, the Chinese Lunar Seventh Month is known as the "Hungry Ghost Festival". It is where all the ghosts are released from hell for a one-month break. To the Buddhists, the 15th day of the 7th month is known as the "Buddha's Joy Day". This is the last day of the Sangha's summer retreat, where they had observed the precepts and practiced cultivation, thus their merits accumulated are immense and beyond imagination. In the Ullambana Sutra, the Buddha instructs his disciple Maudgalyayana on how to obtain liberation for his mother, who was reborn in the realm of the hungry ghost, by making offering to these sanghas through their immense merits.
